Dolly Parton Expresses Support for Britney Spears
"I think she is a wonderful artist and I think she's a wonderful girl"
Published Jul 30, 2021Dolly Parton has weighed in on the #FreeBritney movement, expressing support for Britney Spears during a Thursday (July 29) appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
"Well, I try not to get involved in other people's business," Parton said. "I think she is a wonderful artist and I think she's a wonderful girl and I only wish her the best."
Spears is in the midst of a protracted legal battle to remove her father Jamie Spears from his position as conservator of her estate. On Monday (July 26), Spears' lawyer officially requested that the court replace him with CPA Jason Rubin as overseer of Spears' finances.
Parton said she understands "all those crazy things," recalling her own legal troubles after parting ways with former musical partner Porter Wagoner in 1974.
"I went through a lot of that myself, through a big lawsuit in my early days with Porter Wagoner, trying to get out on my own," Parton said. "So I understand where she's coming from and how she feels."
Parton's goddaughter, Miley Cyrus, has also spoken out in support of Britney, changing the lyrics of "Party in the U.S.A" to "The taxi man turned on the radio, he turned to me and said, 'Free Britney, Free Britney!'" during a Las Vegas performance earlier this month.
